What to do Before Your Spray Tan The Day Before Your Appointment Exfoliate your entire body the day before you treatment to remove dry, flaky skin that causes uneven tanning. Be sure to focus on dry areas like the elbows, knees, and feet. If possible exfoliate for a few days prior to your appointment. The smoother the skin the better the tan will look and last. Shave at least 24 hours before your tan. Make sure you do all of your nail, waxing, facial, and body treatments at least one day prior to your treatment. The Day of Your Appointment Your skin should be clean~ Shower prior to your appointment. Remove all makeup and jewelry. Try to keep your jewelry off for a few hours, as you do not want anything rubbing your freshly tanned skin. DO NOT apply lotions or perfumes prior to getting sprayed~ They leave a residue on the skin that acts as a barrier not allowing the spray tanning solution on the skin’s surface. Use deodorant very sparingly, avoid using it if possible. Wear dark, loose fitting clothing and sandals after your application. We recommend a dark maxi dress or sweat pants. Do NOT wear silk, wool, nylon, or blends. The solution will wash out of cotton but in some cases it may stain light colored undergarments. If you do experience such stains, they usually can be removed by soaking the garment in water and oxygen bleach solution. What to Expect During Your Application The full appointment time is around 30 minutes.   During your consultation, Cristal will speak to you about the color you want to achieve. Your custom color will be determined based on your current skin color and goals. You may tan in the garment of your choice. Dark bathing suits and dark undergarments work well. You can wear as much or as little as you are comfortable with. Discretion is followed and your comfort is the main priority. Men and minors are required to wear underwear or bathing suit. What to do After Your Spray Tan After your application you cannot shower for 10-12 hours. It is best if you can sleep with the solution on over night. This is the developing period. Until you shower, avoid sweating or getting wet with water and lotions of any kind. Avoid light colored sheets and upholstery during the setting period. When you take you first shower use colder water then normal. This will set the tan. You will see the cosmetic bronzer in the water but do not worry, your tan is not washing off, the DHA is what makes you tan. Your tan will last up to 10 days depending on how diligently you follow the after tanning tips. If you use tan extenders your tan will last longer. Remember that the tanned surface is still susceptible to the sun’s harmful UV rays, so use a broad spectrum SPF lotion before sun exposure.    After Spray Tanning Tips to Make Your Tan Last Your tan will last about 10 days, but can remain longer with proper care. When getting out of the shower BLOT your skin with a towel. Pat dry and DO NOT RUB! Wait at least 24 hours to shave. Shaving can cause fading so try to shave only as needed. The texture of a washcloth can be in itself an exfoliant, so when showering, use a hand or loofah instead. Avoid bar soap. Do not exfoliate or use any harsh soaps or scrubs for the first 7 days after getting a spray tan. Moisturize your skin at least a 2x a day with alcohol free lotion. This will slow down the natural exfoliation process. However do NOT start moisturizing until AFTER you shower, this can streak your spray tan and cause it to develop uneven! (Lotions containing cetyl alcohol are ok) Avoid excessive swimming in chlorinated water, hot tubs, and long baths. Tan extenders can be used to provide an even appearance and make your glow last even longer. Avoid toners containing alcohols or witch hazel in higher amounts. Look where they are listed in the ingredients. If they are in the top 3 do not use the product. The use of Alpha Hydroxy Acids, such as those found in some cosmetics or anti-aging products, will increase exfoliating and accelerate a tan’s fading process. Bug spray can cause your tan to fade. Acutane and salicylic acids can cause issues. Antibiotics and other medications that affect you skin can also affect your tan.
